Lowcountry Local First to open co-working space in Charleston

Up to 35 local entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to work under the same roof with a new co-working space in downtown Charleston.

Lowcountry Local First — a Charleston nonprofit that supports local, independent businesses and  promotes local goods — plans to open a co-working space in the first quarter of 2014.

The space will not be sector-specific. Lowcountry Local First Executive Director Jamee Haley anticipates local entrepreneurs, small business owners and  creative types using the 3,100-square-foot space.

So far, freelance writers, product developers, marketing professionals, interior architects and  health coaches have expressed interest in the space, Haley said.

The space will be in a building on the same property as 1600 Meeting, an office space for art and  design studios, community groups and  nonprofits.

Users can choose between either paying for a small office space or individual desks, or a part-time membership option in which they can come as they wish. Costs will likely run between $150 and  $500 a month. The space will include WiFi, a shared conference room, a kitchen and  a printer.

Rent prices and  design plans are still being determined. The building will receive a small addition, and  the interior will be gutted for renovations.
